K–12 Arts-Based Residencies

Community Word Project

After completing their Teaching Artist Training and Internship Program (now the Teaching Artist Project) from 2014-2015, I worked as a Teaching Artist with Community Word Project (CWP) until 2017. Through cross-disciplinary collaborative arts residencies, CWP encourages young people across New York City to read, interpret, and respond to their community and become active citizens in creating the world in which they want to live. My experience teaching and learning with CWP laid the foundation for my teaching artist practice.

How can I model vulnerability, risk-taking, and a strong sense of self in my teaching artist practice?

Wingspan Arts

Wingspan Arts offers K-12 multi-disciplinary arts education programs throughout New York City. From 2014-2017, I designed and facilitated multiple after-school residencies, including “Storytime Theatre” and “Global Arts.” While at Wingspan, I worked primarily with early learners (K-3) in over eight different elementary schools around the city. Although Wingspan residencies focus on developing artistic skills, I aligned each of my residencies with Bree Picower’s “Six Elements of Social Justice Curriculum Design.”

What is the relationship between process and product in after-school arts education?

Green Generations

Based in New York City, Green Generations’ mission is to “empower children with self-esteem and mindfulness education.” During the 2016-2017 school year I facilitated a twice-weekly after-school program with 3rd graders at PS 5 in the Bronx that used visual art and drama to build and practice social emotional skills. Throughout the year we explored how to name and respond to our emotions, effectively communicate our needs to others, and resolve conflicts without causing harm.

How does my role as an outsider in a community impact learning design and facilitation?

 Mesner Puppet Theatre

In the spring of 2021, I worked with Mesner Puppet Theater to develop and teach arts integrated lessons to support the In The Workshop digital program. The three-part learning series used creative drama to practice basic social emotional skills such as listening, focus, and empathy. I facilitated each virtual lesson for ten different K-2nd grade classes using the Zoom and mmhmm platforms. Get a peak of our space adventure through the screenshots below.

How might I translate creative drama practices to virtual learning settings?
